Persona 5 Akira Kurusu

DSC06806

With Persona 5’s flashy designs it comes as no surprise that every company has dipped their fingers into the same four characters over and over and over. I haven’t been super impressed by the offerings so far, but I do like Kotobukiya’s offering for the Protagonist Akira.

Akira has a great head of hair, it’s wispy and nice and has a definite look of bed head. His eyes have a nice almond shape and a pleasant grey gradient in them. The long eyelashes are a nice touch too. There’s a smile on his lips that combined with his shifty eyes simply screams of mischief.

He has long fingers, well for that matter everything about this figure is long but more on that later. He holds in his hand his phantom thief mask loosely, but it’s actually connected so he won’t drop it, like eight million others figures. Thank you Kotobukiya. The mask is painted with a shiny white paint which seems like a very odd choice for a thief…….. I think a matte finish would have been better. It would have looked significantly less tacky, however tacky is the theme of P5 so I suppose it’s ok.

He is wearing a pretty snazzy grey shirt under his coat. The buttons are well painted and look really nice, as does the basic design of the shirt itself. It does make my condolences go out to cosplayers though, I don’t even want to think about trying to make this. The finish here isn’t shiny and looks really good with the shine on the coat.

The shirt goes down partially over the top of his pants. And speaking of those pants they are very tight against his waist which is nice, I like the wrinkles around his hips and the way the ‘fabric’ clings to his thighs is pretty sweet.

He has nice boots that go up past his ankles, the boots have a nice shine to them. I’m fairly confident that these are the same boots Jane wore in Disneys’ Tarzan….. anyway that was a thing, his boots look good I like the way the foot and ankle are curved, it’s kind of sexy. Probably the sexiest thing about this figure actually.

Now lets talk about the ridiculousness of his legs, they are long, he’s like captain mclonglegs. There is a wedge under his foot that has a screw coming up through it and into his foot. It makes it feel wobbly but is more secure then if it just had a peg.

His base has the phantom thief logo on it as well as the words ‘take your heart’ the broken glass effect is really damn cool, I like the bullet hole and the effect of the cracks around it.

His arms seem kind of thin and spindly, like there is literally no muscle mass there at all. His shoulders also look super mega pointy. His sleeves also have less wrinkles on them then his pants do.

He’s wearing a really shiny jacket, like the grey shirt he’s wearing the lined patterns on his sleeves are really nice. they lead into thick cuffs that match up with the basic look of the figure rather well. I am not fond of his gloves (yes I know they are accurate to the character design) the red against the shades of grey colour scheme just stands out too much. However the sculpt looks really good, I love his knuckles and the cutout at the back of his hand. The gun is decent but relatively non descript.

The tails of his jacket blow out behind him and make the dashing action seem much more dynamic.

His hair is super messy even in the back, I love the look of it.

The back of his jacket has that same nice linework going down the shoulders  and crossing up into the jacket’s collar. It’s very pretty.

The buttons at his lower back are well painted and look relatively well sculpted, it pulls the jacket together nicely and leaves a pile of wrinkles all over his lower back.

Each panel of the jacket has that same linework flowing through its respective curves.

The billowing effect works rather well with the forward moving action, recently we’ve seen a handful of toys (who shall remain nameless) who’s actions versus wind effect have been completely counterintuitive, but this one does not have that problem.

Please feel free to view the longest legs in history from the back view as well., from this angle it’s easy to see that wheras his pants really cling to his thighs they bulge out a great deal at the hips. Like Duo Maxwell’s pants back in Gundam Wing. Anyone know the name of that type of pants? Whelp google didn’t help with that one so I guess onwards….

You can just barely see the screw through the translucent black plastic. So it doesn’t come off as ridiculously tacky.

I do wish that his fingers were spread a little bit more or that his pointer finger were resting on the guns trigger but it’s ok. I just think that the hand holding the mask looks better overall.

The collar goes up high and it’s kind of cool, I’m almost confident that they were just trying to outdo Yu Narukami’s popped collar.

From the bottom we can see that the lines from the back of the jacket don’t line up with the lines on the sleeves.

The paint on buttons is good, nothing out of place there the sculpt on the jacket is very nice (bitches about the sleeves aside) I like the way the wrinkles look going up and down from buttons on the back.

His arm with the gun in hand is thrown behind him with the momentum of his movement, he doesn’t look very combat ready, but it does look damn cool.

I really love the flowing coat pieces, I especially like the way the buttons flow with the waves of the coat.

Even the bottom of the jacket has great movement to it, and it doesn’t do that unfinished thing that has a tendency to happen with skirts and jackets on other figures.

He’s placed very far back on the base to help with his balance. It’s very nicely shaped to the figure as well, like it doesn’t feel obnoxiously large. That’s a nice change for persona figures……

At the bottom of the base there’s a mask hidden on the base. Akira’s mask specifically, it’s kind of a cool hidden easter egg, but it’s not necessary. They used the mask to create a ramp like effect for the base pitching Akira forward.

He has a truly gorgeous profile, with a tantalizing smile on his lips. His expression the mischief written on his face is perfect. Like truly genuinely perfect.

I know it’s silly but I really like the way light reflects off the buttons it creates a nice extra something to catch your attention.

think it’s worth noting that the wrinkles and folds in the fabric around his knees and thighs is truly amazing.

I also don’t think I brought up the little handkerchief folded in his pocket. It’s a nice touch that I honestly wouldn’t have cried if it hadn’t been there, but it’s a nice touch for a gentleman thief.

Coming soon to the collection in Nowhere I’ll be acquiring this garage kit which is pretty badass too!

Is Akira worth it? Yeah I’m going to be pretty honest, he’s stupidly cool, I’m pretty fond of him and he will look great on my shelf with Minato and Narukami oh and that Tatsuya that they’ll never make for me……anyway yes if you were on the fence go buy him he’s pretty badass.

Tune in next time for Crow!….unless my Yurio nendoroid arrives before then…..if he does…..well no promises.

About Tekizen

I am a thirty three year old fujoshi. I adore Aniplex and Capcom both to a near criminal degree. I love cosplaying. Some of my favorites to date are Miles Edgeworth and Chrollo Lucifer. I am also currently working on Varuna. My absolute favorite genre is mystery. I LOVE a good mystery. I have a varying degree of fandoms. I love a lot of different anime, but I can honestly say I love old school american cartoons just the same. My favorite book is The Bacta War in the Star Wars X Wing novel series. I finally beat the Demi-Fiend! He was freaking hard!. I think that's all for now though.
