Back a few years ago Kotobukiya started a line of figures called the ES line. They were male figures, always in at least groups of two. They did Shinji and Kowaru, Akira and Shiki, and my personal favorites Akihiko Sanada and Shujinkou from Persona 3. I saw in a previews catalog back in 2007 that they were making a statue of Sanada sempai and I knew I had to have it.
Akihiko Sanada is the captain of boxing club at school and also one of the original members of S.E.E.S.. It was due to his influence that the evokers they fight with are shaped like handguns. When Akihiko was just a small child a fire broke out at the orphanage where he grew up. His little sister Miki died in the fire. He continues on with the guilt of not being able to save her. At the start of Persona 3 he is only 17guy years old.
Akihiko has dark grey eyes and very short grey hair. His eyebrows are slanted downward and the tilt of his head says that he’s ready for anything. He’s wearing the long sleeves of the winter uniform, and he’s proudly showing off his S.E.E.S. armband.
He wears his brown gloves to protect his hands, and grips his S.E.E.S. pistol as though he were waiting for just the right moment to move. 😀 Probably waiting for his turn to come up! His sweater actually has buttons on it, they’re a dark grey and stand out quite nice against the red of his sweater vest.
His trigger finger adds to the feel of ‘ready for action’. His white belt stands out against his black pants. The silver buckle on this belt though doesn’t stand out very well, but it is there and that’s what really counts.
The way he’s standing with one hip jutting to the side does look a little awkward, but just a little, his legs are spread wide enough that it doesn’t really feel too off, just a little. The rest of the pose is so tense that the way he’s standing seems off.
His black boots are shiny, they have shoelaces, which is nice. They’re also pointy, he is wearing some very pointy dress shoes. The base is blue with a grey sun on it. The other half of the picture is on the base for Shujinkou.
The bandage over Akihiko’s eyebrow has a very interesting feature to it, you can see his eyebrow through it. So for those of us who don’t really care about guns…they gave us a nice alternate, with these hands Akihiko is adjusting his gloves, his number one form of combat, his fists! Also with this alternate set of arms comes the summer uniform! Short sleeves and no armband this time. Also it wasn’t visible in the previous pictures but there is a white scuff on the bottom of the sweater vest.
His hair is ill defined in back, there’s a small bit of detail to it but nothing like what I would have preferred. You can see the pull that his pose has on the back of his vest. There are creases there that insinuate tenseness in his shoulders.
His pants showcase his long legs and nice butt quite well. As a female gamer I can’t help but give my nod of approval at that one. And look back pockets too! Kotobukiya is seriously spoiling me.
The wrinkles go all the way down his pant legs, all too often legs look too straight and perfect, I can never approve of that.
His box features some very nice character art on the side of it, with his Persona Polydeuces in the background. It has the standard large window in the front to show the figure in all it’s glory.
Kudos awarded 4 out of 5!
