Out of the six Taito figures wandering around my house, Squid Girl sits solidly at number 3.
This figure is actually pretty true to Squid Girl’s simple design. Her face is lively, and painted quite well. Her eyes are full of life, not that creepy doll life, but an energetic sort of life.
I must say she does have a serious facial issue though. Her nose and upper lip have become one. Why does her nose go straight down into her mouth? What a goofy profile. Squiddy’s bracelet is scuffed pretty bad as well.
Her stripes on her sundress are crooked. It looks almost as if there was a short decal that they kept applying, and overlapping. I think this is the worst aspect of this figure. The stripe under each arm isn’t much better. The body of the dress looks really good. It appears to be blowing in the wind, as she declares her battle plans.
The base is very basic. It has two holes, one for each foot peg, as well as Ika-chan’s trademark circular tentacle pattern. Her shoes are also simple in design, and done fairly well. They also fit snuggly into her base.
Her pose commands your attention, as any squid invader should. If it weren’t for the blue stripes, this figure would be much better. There are a couple other small flaws here, but most are easy to overlook. There is a wicked seam on the back of her head, as well as a blotchy spot on the back of her hat. The hat itself fits kind of weird, with gaps here and there.
Overall Enjoyment: 7/10
Not a bad figure, but I highly recommend the Wave DX version, or the Kotobukiya 1/8 statue by Takaku & Takeshi.
